The Moth Gatherer: A bright celestial light

Well, another one of those post-hardcore/post-metal bands releasing an album. This is a duo, containing two dudes from Sweden of course, cause this genre is turning into Sweden’s version of the “Norwegian black metal syndrome”. And they are pretty sorry most of the time. It’s quite dark and naked music performed, and the album oozes of sadness, darkness, despair, death, broken toys, flat tires, acne and so forth. I can appreciate this kind of music, and sometimes quite a lot, but then all the parameters must be top notch. In this case it doesn’t really reach the goal line.

I don’t know what they had in mind when they lowered the vocals below zero? They could might as well had it released as an instrumental, cause the vox are super-low in the mix. It’s a pity, cause you hear at least that they use different modes of voices, which could have added some extra edge comparing to other bands in this style. And, the album contains 5 songs, all around 8-10 minutes each so there’s not much action going on. It takes too damn long for the songs to open up and allow you to get a grip on them. Yeah, I know, it’s supposed to be like that with this genre, but in that case, that’s just a proof that they aren’t doing it right. Nope, this genre is the new “retro-trend” and I guess there will be more bands like this coming real soon? I’ve already found my favorites in this style and my brain can’t cope with more. Props for clever use of electronics and piano here and there though.

If you like this genre, well rip off your pants and start stroking that salami, if not, at least give it a try, it’s pretty decent but don’t get me “all the way”.

6.5/10: Depression and darkness is the new white.
